The Challenge

Where This Started.

Before

  • Intermittent fatal errors in production
  • Checkout bugs actively costing lost orders
  • Shipping logic failing silently for specific zones

After

  • Root-caused, permanent fixes — not symptom patches
  • Rebuilt shipping logic validated across zones and product types
  • Defensive checks guarding against future regressions

Business Impact

Why It Mattered

Every hour of checkout instability on a high-traffic store is lost revenue and, longer-term, lost customer trust. The store needed root-cause fixes, not another round of patching symptoms.

Engineering Approach

How We Approached It

Instead of patching each reported bug individually, the engagement started with a full technical audit — tracing every fatal error and checkout failure back to its actual root cause across plugins, theme code, and shipping configuration.

Architecture

How It's Wired Together.

Identified conflicting hook priorities and a shipping logic implementation that broke silently under specific product/zone combinations, then re-architected the affected checkout and shipping code paths for correctness rather than patching around the symptoms.

Implementation

What We Built

Resolved the fatal errors at their source, rebuilt the broken shipping logic, and added defensive checks around the checkout flow so a future plugin update couldn't silently reintroduce the same class of failure.

Technical Highlights

What Made This Work.

  • Root-cause fixes for fatal errors, not symptom patches

  • Rebuilt shipping logic validated across zones and product types

  • Defensive checks to catch future regressions early

Results

The Outcome.

100% checkout reliability restored from a broken state

The store went from intermittent, revenue-costing checkout failures to full reliability — confirmed by the client's own feedback below.

Lessons Learned

What This Taught Us

Stabilisation work pays off far more when it starts with root-cause diagnosis instead of patching the loudest symptom first — the shipping logic bug, in particular, would have kept resurfacing under different plugin updates if it had only been patched rather than rebuilt.
